Overview
There is a strong chance that you may see animals like wild goats and Himalayan monals in the morning on the Chopta Tungnath and Chandrashila Trek since the whole area sits inside the Kedarnath musk deer sanctuary, District Rudraprayag Uttarakhand, Chopta at an approximate height of 2,608 metres. Uttarakhand, a state in the Himalayas, is affectionately known as “Little Switzerland” by locals and visitors alike. The Garhwal area, located in the Himalayas, is a small heaven. With its comfortable summer weather, unique attractions, and stunning monsoon-season scenery, Chopta Tungnath and Chandrashila are popular vacation spots for travellers throughout the year. Bugyal, also known as velvet meadows, and the unspoiled snow-capped peak form its backdrop. When the hills are blanketed in snow in the winter, you can’t help but be pulled to the enchanted land. The route to Chopta crosses the centre of the Panch Kedar Trek. Lord Tungnath also tours the five holiest Shiva temples in the state of Uttarakhand. Both Lord Shree Kedarnath and Lord Madmaheshwar have their own temples on the left. Sri Rudranath and Sri Kalpeshwar temples may be seen on the right, while Sri Tungnath temples can be found just above them. Despite Chopta’s reputation as a birdwatcher’s paradise, it’s home to a wide variety of animal species as well. A total of about two hundred species of birds, both permanent and transient, have been recorded in this area. Many species of these birds have been documented in the Himalayas, such as the Hill Partridge, Scarlet Finch, Scarlet Monal, and Himalayan Swiftlet. National and international conservation and biodiversity organisations have recognised Chopta as a crucial location for the observation of wild animals and birds. Several sightings have been reported from nearby locations including Dugal bitta, Mandal village, and the Tungnath trek route. Amazing in design and construction, the Bhagwan Tungnath Temple is a sight to see. The priest hopes that the Tungnath temple is older than a thousand years. This major temple is said to be dedicated to Lord Shiva, but several of the smaller stone temples in the neighbourhood are dedicated to the Goddess Parvati. Chandrashila Peak is also considered in this sense. The path begins to narrow and climb steeply after passing the Tungnath Temple, leading eventually to the fabled meadows atop Chandrashila Peak. After hiking another 1.5 kilometres from Tungnath Temple, you’ll arrive at Chandrashila Peak. The mountain that has the Tungnath temple may be climbed to its highest point, the Chandrashila Peak. A beautiful shrine in the shape of a little temple sits atop the hill. The highest point of this range is 3,690 metres above sea level on Chandrashila Peak, which stretches in a 360-degree arc in all directions. The Shivling Peak, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Kedar Dome, Chaukhamba, Kamet, and Gangotri ranges, and the rest of the Himalayas are all visible from that vantage point, along with other mountain summits.
Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Sari
This morning at 6:30 AM, our tour guides will be waiting for you at the Rishikesh bus station. If you want to start your walk early in the morning, you may take a bus from Delhi overnight to go to Haridwar, or you can get there a few days early and spend some time seeing the area. Haridwar and Rishikesh, located on each side of the Ganges, are staples of the Uttarakhand pilgrimage circuit. At Rishikesh, you may spend your day doing both traditional activities and exciting water sports on the Ganges. The trip to the hamlet of Sari from here takes about seven to eight hours by car. Take in the stunning panoramas of the Garhwal Mountains as you go up the road. Devaprayag, a town at the site of magnificent confluence of the rivers Alakananda and Bhagirathi, is the most beautiful and unforgettable landmark along the trip. You’ll be accompanied by the river the whole way, and by the time you get to Sari, it’ll be between 6:30 and 6:00 in the morning. Beautiful images of saris can be seen all over the internet, depicting little huts perched on top of mountains and surrounded by green fields. If you forget to pack an item necessary for the journey, you could find a useful replacement in the market in Sari.
Day2: Trek from Sari to Deorital
The climb and descent are equally split on the first day. At the top of the route, where the Chandrashila peak and its surrounding peaks are more clearly seen, you may follow a well-defined rocky path. As a matter of fact, the Tunganath temple is hardly visible. From here, the ridge steeply rises to the rear and the summit. Be ready for a challenging ascent that will serve as your introduction to the game’s more challenging elements. As you go through the forest, you will eventually reach the rest area that has been constructed by the Forest Service. If the Trek Leader has given you a break timer, you may rest here for 20 minutes. Be ready to be blown away by the sight of the mountain tumbling down. When you’re ready, the path will take you through a Rhododendron grove. There is no better time to go on a hike than in the spring, when the rhododendrons’ vivid shadow blossoms stand out against the rest of the landscape. Constant ascent is what we’re doing. Over 7,434 feet, residents of nearby settlements become invisible. After about 20 minutes, we’ll be standing on a gentle incline overlooking the glistening Deoriatal lakes. As you look at Lake from a distance, the stunning Chaukhamba mountain range will be seen in the backdrop. It’s around three o’clock in the afternoon when you get there. Wait till daylight, when the clouds have dissipated and a frame of Chaukhamba will be lit up by sunlight so brilliant that it seems like diamonds. This is a great place for nature lovers and bird watchers, since they will have plenty of time to explore the surrounding forest and all of its hidden treasures. As you reach the Deorital camp on the lake, you may have a nice lunch.
Day3: From Deorital to Baniyakund to Rohini Bugyal trek and back
As you continue today’s climb, the Chaukhamba mountain range and Mount Kedar’s peak will come into closer focus. The woodland path is shaded by maples and rhododendrons, making for a pleasant walk in the fresh air. Pink and red rhododendrons, two separate species, may be seen in increasing numbers after the first few hundred yards of deep woodland. There are several little shrines strewn throughout the trail, easily identifiable by the yellow and red flags that mark their locations. After making your way through a wooded clearing studded with crimson flowers, We are then led up a steep trail to the villages of Rohgini Bugyal and Chopta. On the steep ascent, the route flattens out and sways somewhat. Going over the edge will reward you with a breathtaking panorama of the Chandrashila. The woodland, formerly dominated by Rhododendrons alone, is now now home to ancient oaks and maples, which you’ll encounter after passing across the flat terrain. It’s a part of the Kedarnath Sanctuary, where lucky visitors could see red foxes and other wildlife. The Bhagdwal temple is another 25 minutes along the Kedarnath Sanctuary path. Temple of Bhagdwal. There are three different trails that meet here. There is a path that leads to the town of Sari, another that leads to Ukhimath, and still another that leads down to the fields of Rohini Bugyal. As you continue along this route, Chandrashila and the neighbouring Kala Parvat Mountain will become more prominent on each side. Following this arc, you’ll reach Bisuri Tal Lake and the little tarn of Nandikund at the base of Kala Parvat. As you continue downstream, a silvery rivulet coming down from Chandrashila will cross your path. To reach a wooden bridge over the river, proceed beyond this water refilling station. The meadows start at a short distance away. Several kinds of safe havens are available. Local shepherds have brought their flocks here for grazing. A route through the bush terminates at a roadhead not far away. The region near Chopta hamlet is where we’ve set our camp in a woodland clearing.
Day4: Trek from Baniyakund to Tunganath Chandrashilla top and then back
In the wee hours of the morning, we set out on our walk. The dawn in Tunganath will be breathtaking, beginning in the wee hours of the night. From Chopta, hikers may take a well-marked concrete path to the shrine. The trail is steep and winding today, making for a challenging trek. The location with the flagpole is significant, but there are other interesting stops along the road. As soon as you round the 10th curve, there it is on the right. Here, you may take in stunning views of Chandrashila, out to the right. From here, you can also see the peak that leads to Chandrashila. This mountain top is known as Ravanshila. Snow falls during the colder months. After the eleventh turn, you may enter Tunganath, where the breathtaking Chandrashila mountain rises to a height of 12,083 feet. From inside the temple grounds, the ascent to the summit may be started. From December through late April, the peak receives heavy snowfall and should be treated as such. In the event of snow climbing, gaiters and crampons are recommended, and the trek leader may even use an Ice knife to cut through the slushy layer of snow. After a strenuous ascent, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Kumaon and Garhwal ranges in every direction. Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Dronagiri, Chaukhamba, and Kedar are just a few of the magnificent mountains seen in this panorama. From the outskirts, you can also make out the Thalaysagar and Gangotri mountain ranges. There is less effort and time involved in the return trip. The journey to the Baniyakund campground takes around three hours.
Day5: Drive from Baniyakund to Rishikesh
On day five, you will make your way back from the Chopta trailhead in the direction of Rishikesh. With pleasant recollections of the mountainous landscape, you will arrive in Rishikesh late at night after a seven-hour trek. We recommend trying to visit Delhi at night.

Fitness
As you climb to higher altitudes, the air grows thinner and less oxygen is present. The amount of oxygen in our blood is equivalent to the proportion of haemoglobin that is saturated with oxygen. At altitudes above around 2,100 metres (7,000 feet), the amount of oxygen carried by our blood starts to decrease. At the same time, the human body possesses both immediate and long-term adaptations to altitude that help it somewhat compensate for the shortage of oxygen.
A Great First Trek for Anyone Who Wants to Get Into Hiking:
- The Chopta Chandrashila Tunganath Trip is an Easy to Moderate level trek in terms of fitness requirements. The track is well-marked and has only modest inclines and declines. Water fountains may be seen at various points throughout the path. However, it’s still best to be ready if you’re planning your first major Himalayan trekking adventure. Safety
Points to remember for safety in the trek:
- It is essential that you arrive at the starting point of any hike or excursion in the best possible physical condition and readiness.
- The hike is not tough; in fact, if you can keep both your feet and your mind calm and strong during the journey, you will discover that the hike is rather simple.

- It is imperative that I have my medical equipment with me at all times; it is of the utmost significance.
- Indiantreks will ensure that you have a fully stocked first aid kit at all times, including oxygen cylinders and other medications that may be required throughout the trek.

Best time for the trek
🗓️ Best Time to Trek — A Guide by Octatrav
One of the key advantages of many Himalayan treks is that they remain accessible for a large part of the year. Most trekking routes open up in March, welcoming trekkers with springtime freshness and moderate temperatures. This season continues through late June, offering pleasant weather and clear views—ideal for a memorable trekking experience.
🍁 Trekking resumes in mid-September and continues until late November, when the landscape transforms with golden leaves and crisp air. This autumn window is perfect for those who prefer scenic beauty combined with clear skies.
❄️ Winter trekking, although breathtaking, comes with challenges. From December to mid-March, most high-altitude trails get buried under heavy snow, making them inaccessible or risky. Government authorities usually restrict entry during this time to avoid mishaps due to extreme cold, snowfall, and avalanches.
✅ Summary:
Spring & Summer (March–June): Best time for pleasant weather and blooming landscapes.
Monsoon (July–Early September): Most trails are closed due to safety concerns.
Autumn (Mid-September–November): Ideal time with great weather and views.
Winter (December–Mid-March): High snow levels; many treks remain closed.
With Octatrav, you’ll always be informed about the best seasons for your chosen trek. Our expert guidance ensures that you trek during the safest and most scenic times of the year, making your adventure both memorable and secure.
How Difficult is the trek
This trek is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty, with a rating that can vary from easy to challenging depending on your experience and fitness level.
The journey begins at a base village situated around 6,000 ft, gradually ascending to a maximum altitude of nearly 11,500 ft over the course of a few days.
While the route mostly involves a pleasant hike through scenic landscapes, here are two main reasons why it falls under the moderate category:
– Long daily distances: On average, you may be covering 10 km per day, which demands good stamina and consistent pacing.
– Limited exit points: Most treks of this nature have only one route in and out, making emergency exits or quick returns difficult in case of unforeseen situations.

How to Prepare for a High-Altitude Trek
Fitness Guide by Octatrav
Preparing for a trek requires building both stamina and strength. One of the best ways to get started is by jogging, which targets the same muscles used during trekking—calves, glutes, and hamstrings. It’s a simple and effective way to improve endurance without the need for any equipment.
Minimum Fitness Target
To trek comfortably, you should be able to run 5 km in under 60 minutes. This ensures that you can maintain a steady pace and handle long walking hours at altitude.
How to Achieve This?
Here’s a structured plan you can follow:
🏃♂️ Cardio Training:
Jog at least 4 times a week – consistency is key.
Start small – begin with 2 km runs and gradually increase the distance.
Pace improvement – once you’re running 5 km, aim to bring your timing down to under 35 minutes.
Maintain for 2 weeks – consistently hitting this goal helps build real endurance.
⏳ Training Duration:
Prepare for at least 4–6 weeks based on your current fitness level. The earlier you begin, the better your trek experience will be.
💪 Strength Training Routine
Combine cardio with strength workouts to build muscular endurance:
Squats – builds quads, glutes, and hamstrings.
Lunges – mimics trekking motion; strengthens the entire lower body.
Step-ups – improves climbing strength for steep trails.
Core exercises – planks, Russian twists, leg raises for balance and stability.
Back workouts – deadlifts, bent-over rows, and shoulder presses to carry your backpack with ease.
🧘♂️ Flexibility & Recovery
Stretch daily – especially your calves, hamstrings, quads, and lower back.
Incorporate yoga or Pilates – enhances flexibility and mental focus.
Take rest days – they are essential for muscle recovery and injury prevention.
