      Overview

During the time when the British governed India, the Kuari Pass Trek was investigated by Lord Curzon. At an elevation of 4,264 metres, it is the ideal trek for novice hikers and can be found in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. If you are a novice hiker and are considering beginning your mountaineering career in the Himalayas, then Kuari Pass is an excellent choice for the first walk of your Himalayan expedition. In addition to this, it is ideal for those who like environment due to its unspoiled surroundings, picturesque landscapes, and views of towering peaks. It doesn’t matter whether you go in the winter or summer; the Kuari Pass Climb is a stunningly beautiful uphill journey in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. This trek is ideal for those who have a strong love for mountaineering and see it as having a significant role to play in their lives. In spite of the fact that the peak is at a relatively low height, we advise having a high level of physical endurance and a proven track record of fitness. To go from Dehradun to Joshimath and back to Dehradun again, you will need to take a cab for a total of 544 kilometres, and then you will need to walk 33 kilometres from Dhak Village to the kuari pass peak 12516 feet and then back to Joshimath. These hikes are not too challenging, but they are doable. We’ve been leading them for the last 30 years, and during that time we’ve met individuals from all over the globe who have varying degrees of fitness, but everyone has been able to complete the Kuari pass hike. Don’t give too much thought to it; instead, focus on the natural world around you, and everything will come easily to you. However, you should always seek the assistance of your trek leader, get up early while on the journey, and practise yoga and pranayam each morning.

Day 1: Drive from Haridwar to Joshimath

      Distance: 250Kms

      Time: 11-12hrs

The journey to Joshimath from the Haridwar train station takes around 11 or 12 hours and passes along three holy rivers: the Alaknanda, the Mandakini, and the Ganga. The holy town of Devprayag is at a crossroads where the rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet. This location is quite picturesque. The drive will not get monotonous since the landscape will unexpectedly change at regular intervals as you go deeper. After you have arrived at the Joshimath base camp, you may rest in a guesthouse and then spend the evening exploring the surrounding surroundings. Come back, have supper, and take it easy for the rest of the night at the hotel.

      Distance: 20Kms trek

      Time: 6 hours approx

Get an early start on the day and make your way to Dhak village, which is located 14 kilometres away from Joshimath and serves as the beginning of the Kuari Pass trek. As you begin the climb, you will see that there are shepherded houses visible along the path. Continue your journey by hiking through the oak, deodar, and rhododendron woods. The Dhauli Ganga River runs below near the hydro power plant; now you are going to enter a community called “Tugasi;” hiking here would be a comfort since the route has flattened off here. Continue on until you reach a crest, then descend the other side to arrive at your campground called “Gulling.” It is located in the middle of a forest and provides breathtaking views of the Chaukhamba peaks. Put up your tents, have supper, and then spend the first night of the camping trip at our location.

      Distance: 6Kms

      Time: 4hrs approx

You will want to see the sunrise over the Chaukhamba peaks, so make sure you get up early in the morning. After you’ve finished eating breakfast, go out to the Tail camp. Even though today’s hike is a short and simple one, you will still have to climb all the way to your campground. While you are climbing, take into consideration how lovely it is to stroll under the shadow of trees. After passing through this stretch of woodland, you will see many streams running throughout the area. Carry on your journey until you reach the camping spot. This camping spot is in a clearing in the jungle, and it offers breathtaking views of the Hathi Ghoda peaks and the Dronagiri Mountains. Take pleasure in the tranquilly of spending the night here. Following supper, retire to the cosiness of your tents for the night.

      Distance: 13Kms

      Time: 9hrs approx

Today First thing in the morning, wake up and get ready to tackle Kuari Top and Kuari Pass today. Once you begin your hike, you will notice that the tree line becomes lower as the elevation increases. The climb is challenging, but once you reach the ridge top, the panoramic vistas of the Himalayan peaks will leave you speechless, and the time and effort you put in will be more than rewarded. Take in the magnificent views of Nanda Devi and Trishul Mountain. Continue on your journey and, when you reach Kuari Top, do it with a joyful and contented heart. Admire the breathtaking scenery of each and every mountain that may be seen. Now is the time to begin descending, and as you reach Kuari Pass, you should not linger here for too long since the views will become better farther on. The ascent to Jhandi Top is not too difficult, but once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with views that are even more breathtaking than those from Kuari Pass. Enjoy the satisfaction of having reached the peak after your ascent by taking some time to rest there. After there, make your way down to your campsite in Khullara camp. The meadow and woodland that make up Khullara camp serve as your temporary encampment for the day. Descend into the woods and you will eventually get there. It provides excellent views of Dronagiri. Put up your tents in this field, enjoy some excellent meal, and then celebrate the mission’s successful conclusion before retiring for the night.

      Distance: 9Kms

      Time: 5hrs approx

Have a good breakfast, and remember that today you will be travelling to Joshimath by way of Auli. Visit Garson Bugyal after you have begun the hike; you will be awestruck by the reflection of the mountains in the water there. As you get closer to the path, the Himalayan communities will become more obvious. You will eventually arrive to “Garson Bugyal,” a lovely meadow that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Wait here for a time, then resume your descent from this point. Along the trail is a stunning little temple, and after passing it, the going becomes much easier as you go downward. Continue on until you reach the Upper Auli, and then make your way to the main Auli. Keep going down the trail, and you’ll be there in an hour. In the winter, Auli is a fantastic place to visit for snow. Spend some time in this area, and then take a cab the 18 kilometres to Joshimath, where the hotel accommodations will be arranged for you.

As you climb to higher altitudes, the air grows thinner and less oxygen is present. The amount of oxygen in our blood is equivalent to the proportion of haemoglobin that is saturated with oxygen. At altitudes above around 2,100 metres (7,000 feet), the amount of oxygen carried by our blood starts to decrease. At the same time, the human body possesses both immediate and long-term adaptations to altitude that help it somewhat compensate for the shortage of oxygen.

      Best time for the trek

🗓️ Best Time to Trek — A Guide by Octatrav

One of the key advantages of many Himalayan treks is that they remain accessible for a large part of the year. Most trekking routes open up in March, welcoming trekkers with springtime freshness and moderate temperatures. This season continues through late June, offering pleasant weather and clear views—ideal for a memorable trekking experience.

🍁 Trekking resumes in mid-September and continues until late November, when the landscape transforms with golden leaves and crisp air. This autumn window is perfect for those who prefer scenic beauty combined with clear skies.

❄️ Winter trekking, although breathtaking, comes with challenges. From December to mid-March, most high-altitude trails get buried under heavy snow, making them inaccessible or risky. Government authorities usually restrict entry during this time to avoid mishaps due to extreme cold, snowfall, and avalanches.

      ✅ Summary:

      • Spring & Summer (March–June): Best time for pleasant weather and blooming landscapes.

      • Monsoon (July–Early September): Most trails are closed due to safety concerns.

      • Autumn (Mid-September–November): Ideal time with great weather and views.

      • Winter (December–Mid-March): High snow levels; many treks remain closed.

With Octatrav, you’ll always be informed about the best seasons for your chosen trek. Our expert guidance ensures that you trek during the safest and most scenic times of the year, making your adventure both memorable and secure.

This trek is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty, with a rating that can vary from easy to challenging depending on your experience and fitness level.

The journey begins at a base village situated around 6,000 ft, gradually ascending to a maximum altitude of nearly 11,500 ft over the course of a few days.

While the route mostly involves a pleasant hike through scenic landscapes, here are two main reasons why it falls under the moderate category:

Long daily distances: On average, you may be covering 10 km per day, which demands good stamina and consistent pacing.
Limited exit points: Most treks of this nature have only one route in and out, making emergency exits or quick returns difficult in case of unforeseen situations.

How to Prepare for a High-Altitude Trek

      Fitness Guide by Octatrav

Preparing for a trek requires building both stamina and strength. One of the best ways to get started is by jogging, which targets the same muscles used during trekking—calves, glutes, and hamstrings. It’s a simple and effective way to improve endurance without the need for any equipment.

      Minimum Fitness Target

To trek comfortably, you should be able to run 5 km in under 60 minutes. This ensures that you can maintain a steady pace and handle long walking hours at altitude.

      How to Achieve This?

Here’s a structured plan you can follow:

      🏃‍♂️ Cardio Training:

      • Jog at least 4 times a week – consistency is key.

      • Start small – begin with 2 km runs and gradually increase the distance.

      • Pace improvement – once you’re running 5 km, aim to bring your timing down to under 35 minutes.

      • Maintain for 2 weeks – consistently hitting this goal helps build real endurance.

      ⏳ Training Duration:

Prepare for at least 4–6 weeks based on your current fitness level. The earlier you begin, the better your trek experience will be.

      💪 Strength Training Routine

Combine cardio with strength workouts to build muscular endurance:

      • Squats – builds quads, glutes, and hamstrings.

      • Lunges – mimics trekking motion; strengthens the entire lower body.

      • Step-ups – improves climbing strength for steep trails.

      • Core exercises – planks, Russian twists, leg raises for balance and stability.

      • Back workouts – deadlifts, bent-over rows, and shoulder presses to carry your backpack with ease.

      🧘‍♂️ Flexibility & Recovery

      • Stretch daily – especially your calves, hamstrings, quads, and lower back.

      • Incorporate yoga or Pilates – enhances flexibility and mental focus.

      • Take rest days – they are essential for muscle recovery and injury prevention.

      🔁 Trek-Ready Summary

      • 🏃‍♂️ Cardio: Build stamina through jogging.

      • 💪 Strength: Focus on legs, back, and core.

      • 🤸‍♂️ Flexibility: Stretch regularly and stay injury-free.

      • Consistency: Stick to a 6–8 week routine for best results.
