      Overview

The Phulara Ridge can be found in the north-eastern corner of Uttarakhand, about 25 kilometres from from the state line with Himachal Pradesh. This hike is at a very high altitude, with its highest point being 12,171 feet above mean sea level (MSL). It may be found inside Govind Pashu Vihar National Park in its current location. It is located in close proximity to several well-known hikes, such as the Kedarkantha and Har Ki Du-Ruinsara Tal trails. It is generally accepted that the Phulara Ridge hike begins and ends in Sankari. It has an unfair edge over other treks due to its location atop Phulara Ridge, which is in a more advantageous geographic position. Because it is situated inside the shadow cast by the surrounding terrain, the sun’s rays do not immediately illuminate the surrounding region. Because of this, the snow that covers the paths remains for a longer period of time, sometimes even into the spring. A path with an elevation of less than 13,000 feet is not likely to experience this kind of thing on a regular basis. This hike along Phulara Ridge is one that is best done during the warmer months of summer, namely between the months of June and May.

It is quite a sight to see how the route goes from being covered in snow to being green over time. As a result of the rhododendrons coming into bloom, the possibility of seeing the one-of-a-kind phenomenon known as alpenglow, and the vibrant meadows of Pushtara, this time of year is one of the best times to go hiking. The monsoon is yet another time of year when you may attempt to conquer Phulara Ridge. The monsoon postponement season, which runs from September through November, is the best time to go trekking around Phulara Ridge. In September, after being refreshed by the monsoon rains, the paths are a verdant and vibrant green colour. As we go closer to fall, the landscape undergoes a colour transition, converting into magnificent colours of orange and yellow as the season progresses. In addition, this time of year affords some of the most breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Sankri

      Distance: 180Kms

      Time: 6-7hrs

Sankari, the settlement that serves as the trek’s starting point and base camp, is a little, picturesque place that has just 250 residents. The city of Sankari’s retail scene consists mostly of a few different eateries and businesses. Due to the fact that it serves as the starting point for a number of different hikes, including Kedarkantha, Bali Pass, and Borasu Pass, the area is generally bustling with travellers during the peak season. Views of the sun setting behind the higher Himalayas may be seen from the hamlet, which is a sight to see. Kotgaon is located to the west of the Swargarohini Mountains, which dazzle in the sunshine as it rises high above the ridges in that direction. The path to Sankari will take travellers via Nainbagh, Naugaon, Purola, Jarmola, Mori Naitwar (from Naitwar, taking a left turn would bring you to Dhaula, which serves as the starting point for the trip to Rupin Pass and Bharadsar lake), and finally Sankari.

      Distance: 7Kms

      Time: 5-6hours

This morning, the uplifting morning is patiently waiting for you to wake up so that it may begin. Experience the serenity that comes with being surrounded by mountains; there is no connection and nothing worldly to distract you; all that is here is tranquilly. At six in the morning, savour the steaming cup of coffee or tea, and then get ready for breakfast at seven thirty. Following the directions of your tour guide, you are required to depart promptly at 8:30 in the morning. The journey begins at Sankri and continues on to Sikolta, which is located seven kilometres distant. After a short stroll from the main market, you will be able to see the Swargarohini peaks (I, II, and III) as well as bandarpunch peak, the black peak, which will captivate you. The ascent is made through a thick pine forest, and although it is a delight to stroll under the shade of the trees, it is also a place where you may view several rare species of Himalayan birds. You will arrive to Jaional Thach, which is the last destination, and it will provide you with views of the Dhuda mountain. Take a moment to look around and locate Phulara Ridge, your objective. At this point, the path splits in two; one branch travels through “Juda Ka Talab,” while the other continues into thick woodlands. Up ahead, you’ll come across some beautiful mountain vistas and streams. Continue your hike for another hour, taking stops to relax along the way, and you will eventually reach your campsite. It is a spacious and enticing meadow known as “Sikolta.” In the immediate area, there are many damaged shepherd huts and a number of streams.

      Distance: 3Kms

      Time: 3-4hrs

After a wholesome breakfast, you should depart from Sikolta and go in the direction of Bhoj Gadi. You will get to a bridge that divides the valley after climbing through a forest for half an hour. Up ahead is a stunning clearing with blossoming flowers that goes by the name “Karsu Thach.” You will be greeted with the astonishing sight of Kedarkantha peak as you take in the view from this Thach, which provides a clear view of the treeline as it recedes. Now, go into a different portion of the undulating meadows; the campground is around a half hour’s walk away from here. You will eventually arrive at “Bhoj Gadi,” a levelled meadow that offers breathtaking views of Kedarkantha, Vijay Top, Devkiyaara, and Swargarohini. From this campground, Kedarkantha is a considerable way away, although it is possible to walk there. You have a strong desire to visit that location. Eat your supper and then get some much-needed slumber for the night.

      Distance: 6Kms

      Time: 6-7hrs

The Phulara Ridge may be seen in its entirety from the Bhoj Gadi campground, and it will only take you half an hour to reach the peak. The ascent will be a pleasant one today thanks to the beautiful views and the abundance of flora and fauna; you may even see some rare Himalayan birds along the route. After a strenuous climb, you will finally reach the ridge top and be rewarded with magnificent views of the high Himalayan peaks. From the highest point of the ridge, the following mountains may be viewed in their entirety: Swargarohini, Kala Nag, Devkiyara, Bandarpoonch, Rangnala, Hanuman Top, Top of Sarutal, Vijay Top, and Kedarkantha. When taken into consideration as a whole, they provide a visual treat. Spend some time there, take in the breathtaking scenery, and enjoy the atmosphere before continuing on to Pushtara Thach. The course has a variety of steep climbs and challenging descents. After navigating across Sarutal’s foothills, you will find yourself on the other side of the hill. After a quick descent beginning here, one will arrive to Pushtara Thach. There are expansive meadows that are replete with a profusion of wildflowers and vegetation. This Thach is surrounded by a number of streams, making it an excellent location for camping. Further on is a stunning lake that was created by the melting of glaciers; you may continue ahead and explore the lake region, or you can relax in your tents.

      Distance: 8Kms

      Time: 5-6hrs

It is not difficult to descend till you reach Taluka, but you should be cautious descending downhill since the vast majority of people twist their ankles. You are about to enter a dense forest, where the paths might be exceedingly complex; thus, you should follow your guide. Here in this area, the Langoors may be seen swinging from tree to tree quite effortlessly. After a very short hike, you will come upon a community where each home has its own herd of cows, goats, and other livestock. After half an hour, you will arrive at Taluka, which is a hamlet with a few stores. A vehicle will be provided to take us to Sankri from here, and once we get there, the accommodations will be booked at a hotel there.

      Distance: 180Kms

      Time: 6-7hrs

This morning will be your last breakfast with the other members of the Indiantreks crew on this hike. Following some stunning photographs and the presentation of the awards, we will say our goodbyes to you all and depart from Sankri.

As you climb to higher altitudes, the air grows thinner and less oxygen is present. The amount of oxygen in our blood is equivalent to the proportion of haemoglobin that is saturated with oxygen. At altitudes above around 2,100 metres (7,000 feet), the amount of oxygen carried by our blood starts to decrease. At the same time, the human body possesses both immediate and long-term adaptations to altitude that help it somewhat compensate for the shortage of oxygen.

      Best time for the trek

🗓️ Best Time to Trek — A Guide by Octatrav

One of the key advantages of many Himalayan treks is that they remain accessible for a large part of the year. Most trekking routes open up in March, welcoming trekkers with springtime freshness and moderate temperatures. This season continues through late June, offering pleasant weather and clear views—ideal for a memorable trekking experience.

🍁 Trekking resumes in mid-September and continues until late November, when the landscape transforms with golden leaves and crisp air. This autumn window is perfect for those who prefer scenic beauty combined with clear skies.

❄️ Winter trekking, although breathtaking, comes with challenges. From December to mid-March, most high-altitude trails get buried under heavy snow, making them inaccessible or risky. Government authorities usually restrict entry during this time to avoid mishaps due to extreme cold, snowfall, and avalanches.

      ✅ Summary:

      • Spring & Summer (March–June): Best time for pleasant weather and blooming landscapes.

      • Monsoon (July–Early September): Most trails are closed due to safety concerns.

      • Autumn (Mid-September–November): Ideal time with great weather and views.

      • Winter (December–Mid-March): High snow levels; many treks remain closed.

With Octatrav, you’ll always be informed about the best seasons for your chosen trek. Our expert guidance ensures that you trek during the safest and most scenic times of the year, making your adventure both memorable and secure.

This trek is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty, with a rating that can vary from easy to challenging depending on your experience and fitness level.

The journey begins at a base village situated around 6,000 ft, gradually ascending to a maximum altitude of nearly 11,500 ft over the course of a few days.

While the route mostly involves a pleasant hike through scenic landscapes, here are two main reasons why it falls under the moderate category:

Long daily distances: On average, you may be covering 10 km per day, which demands good stamina and consistent pacing.
Limited exit points: Most treks of this nature have only one route in and out, making emergency exits or quick returns difficult in case of unforeseen situations.

How to Prepare for a High-Altitude Trek

      Fitness Guide by Octatrav

Preparing for a trek requires building both stamina and strength. One of the best ways to get started is by jogging, which targets the same muscles used during trekking—calves, glutes, and hamstrings. It’s a simple and effective way to improve endurance without the need for any equipment.

      Minimum Fitness Target

To trek comfortably, you should be able to run 5 km in under 60 minutes. This ensures that you can maintain a steady pace and handle long walking hours at altitude.

      How to Achieve This?

Here’s a structured plan you can follow:

      🏃‍♂️ Cardio Training:

      • Jog at least 4 times a week – consistency is key.

      • Start small – begin with 2 km runs and gradually increase the distance.

      • Pace improvement – once you’re running 5 km, aim to bring your timing down to under 35 minutes.

      • Maintain for 2 weeks – consistently hitting this goal helps build real endurance.

      ⏳ Training Duration:

Prepare for at least 4–6 weeks based on your current fitness level. The earlier you begin, the better your trek experience will be.

      💪 Strength Training Routine

Combine cardio with strength workouts to build muscular endurance:

      • Squats – builds quads, glutes, and hamstrings.

      • Lunges – mimics trekking motion; strengthens the entire lower body.

      • Step-ups – improves climbing strength for steep trails.

      • Core exercises – planks, Russian twists, leg raises for balance and stability.

      • Back workouts – deadlifts, bent-over rows, and shoulder presses to carry your backpack with ease.

      🧘‍♂️ Flexibility & Recovery

      • Stretch daily – especially your calves, hamstrings, quads, and lower back.

      • Incorporate yoga or Pilates – enhances flexibility and mental focus.

      • Take rest days – they are essential for muscle recovery and injury prevention.

      🔁 Trek-Ready Summary

      • 🏃‍♂️ Cardio: Build stamina through jogging.

      • 💪 Strength: Focus on legs, back, and core.

      • 🤸‍♂️ Flexibility: Stretch regularly and stay injury-free.

      • Consistency: Stick to a 6–8 week routine for best results.
