Overview
The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek — a Journey to the Sacred River The Ganges is considered the holiest river in Hinduism, and its origin may be found in Gaumukh, which is located on the Gangotri glacier. The glacier travels in a westerly direction and passes directly below Chaukhamba Peak, which is the highest point in the Group. This is the only Ganga valley from where a whole panorama of Bhagirathi peak can be seen, including Shivling Peak, Matri Peak, Raktvan, and Bhagirathi peaks I, II, and III. From this vantage point, one can also view the peaks of Tapovan and Nill Tal, which are both 4,400 metres high. The journey leads one to Gaumukh or moumukhi maa Ganga Bhojbasa after TM Program and breakfast. After entering the national park, you stroll along the banks of the Bhagirathi River while taking in the stunning environment and admiring the wonderful view of Shiv Ling Mountain. Along the way, you encounter pilgrims such as Sanyasis and Sadhus. At different locations, there are cosy little tent stores where you can take a break, get something warm to drink, and replenish your water supply. There will be several opportunities along the road to go on with the journey while riding a mule. Upon arrival, the TM programme allows participants to take in the breathtaking views of Shiv Ling Mountain. The name “Tapovan” originates from the Sanskrit roots “tapas,” which means “pain” or “suffering,” and “by.”
Until a significant portion of the path from Gangotri was damaged, trekking often begins in Gaumukh, and the journey was ranked as tough to strenuous in terms of its difficulty level. Gangotri – The Gangotri Shrine may be found at an altitude of 3,200 metres, and it is encircled on all sides by Deodar (Cider) and Chir trees (pine). As the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa completed his conquest of the Garhwal region, he commissioned the construction of the first temple there. This temple is frequented by travellers from all corners of the globe on a yearly basis. On the other bank of the river are a number of Buddhist retreat centres known as ashrams and Dharamshalas. It is said that Raja Bhagirath would worship the god Shiva on a slab of rock known as the “Bhagirath Shila,” which can be found next to the temple. There is a natural Shivling that is submerged in the river. Mythology has it that Lord Shiva sat at this location when he was given the Lady Ganga in his matted hair.

Day3: From Gangotri to Chirbasa Trek
Time: 6hrs approx.

The length of the hike is made much less difficult by the steady ascents. After making your way through the paths of Gangotri National Park, you will finally be able to see the magnificent Sudarshan mountain, which will serve as an indication that you have arrived at the Chirbasa Campsite. Since the Bhagirathi river is winding its way through the mountains and the canopies of vegetation are so verdant, this camping spot is one of the most picturesque in the world. Dinner will be provided in the evening, and then everyone will retire to their own camps for the night.
Day4: Trek from Chirbasa to Bhojbasa
Time: 3hrs approx.
Distance: 5kms
After taking in the breathtaking panorama of the mountains as we awoke and refuelling with breakfast, we will go to the next location for our overnight stay. This section of path is much simpler to navigate because to the gentle climb and the broader trails. Birch trees, which are abundant across the valley and are also the reason why the campground is named Bhojbasa, will soon come into view. Birch trees are the reason for this name. As soon as we get to the campground, we are going to kick back and relax for the rest of the day. Dinner will be provided in the evening, and then everyone will retire to their own camps for the night.
Day5: From Bhojbasa to Gaumukh via Tapovan
Time: 7hrs approx.

Mount Shivling, which is widely regarded as one of the holiest mountains, can be seen in its entirety from this vantage point as well. After taking in the majesty of the Gaumukh, we will begin our descent by retracing our ways through the sedimentation of glaciers and dirt paths as we make our way to Bhojbasa. Fitness
As you climb to higher altitudes, the air grows thinner and less oxygen is present. The amount of oxygen in our blood is equivalent to the proportion of haemoglobin that is saturated with oxygen. At altitudes above around 2,100 metres (7,000 feet), the amount of oxygen carried by our blood starts to decrease. At the same time, the human body possesses both immediate and long-term adaptations to altitude that help it somewhat compensate for the shortage of oxygen.
A Great First Trek for Anyone Who Wants to Get Into Hiking:
- The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is an Easy to Moderate level trek in terms of fitness requirements. The track is well-marked and has only modest inclines and declines. 🗓️ Best Time to Trek — A Guide by Octatrav
One of the key advantages of many Himalayan treks is that they remain accessible for a large part of the year. Most trekking routes open up in March, welcoming trekkers with springtime freshness and moderate temperatures. This season continues through late June, offering pleasant weather and clear views—ideal for a memorable trekking experience.
🍁 Trekking resumes in mid-September and continues until late November, when the landscape transforms with golden leaves and crisp air. This autumn window is perfect for those who prefer scenic beauty combined with clear skies.
❄️ Winter trekking, although breathtaking, comes with challenges. From December to mid-March, most high-altitude trails get buried under heavy snow, making them inaccessible or risky. Government authorities usually restrict entry during this time to avoid mishaps due to extreme cold, snowfall, and avalanches.
✅ Summary:
Spring & Summer (March–June): Best time for pleasant weather and blooming landscapes.
Monsoon (July–Early September): Most trails are closed due to safety concerns.
Autumn (Mid-September–November): Ideal time with great weather and views.
Winter (December–Mid-March): High snow levels; many treks remain closed.
With Octatrav, you’ll always be informed about the best seasons for your chosen trek. Our expert guidance ensures that you trek during the safest and most scenic times of the year, making your adventure both memorable and secure.
How Difficult is the trek
This trek is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty, with a rating that can vary from easy to challenging depending on your experience and fitness level.
The journey begins at a base village situated around 6,000 ft, gradually ascending to a maximum altitude of nearly 11,500 ft over the course of a few days.
While the route mostly involves a pleasant hike through scenic landscapes, here are two main reasons why it falls under the moderate category:
– Long daily distances: On average, you may be covering 10 km per day, which demands good stamina and consistent pacing.
– Limited exit points: Most treks of this nature have only one route in and out, making emergency exits or quick returns difficult in case of unforeseen situations.

Maintain for 2 weeks – consistently hitting this goal helps build real endurance.
⏳ Training Duration:
Prepare for at least 4–6 weeks based on your current fitness level. The earlier you begin, the better your trek experience will be.
💪 Strength Training Routine

Squats – builds quads, glutes, and hamstrings.
Lunges – mimics trekking motion; strengthens the entire lower body.
Step-ups – improves climbing strength for steep trails.
